Development of bronchoscopy guided systems

The global objective of this project is the study, the implementation and the evaluation of guiding systems to aid the execution of bronchoscopies for the examination of peripheral lung lesions. The present subproject GUIBROd focuses on the development of two systems: a) a virtual bronchoscopy system controlled with a haptic device and equipped with an automatic trajectory generation engine, that allows a virtual exploration prior to the real execution of the bronchoscopy; b) an assisted bronchoscopy guided system able to guide the doctor during the real execution of the bronchoscopy by using augmented reality data superimposed to the real video. The associated subproject GUIBROe (PI09/90917) will evaluate the developped systems. The expected result is that the use of these guiding systems has a statisitical significant increase in the final diagnosis.
