Welcome
Institute of Organization and Control of Industrial Systems (IOC)
The Institute of Industrial and Control Engineering (IOC) of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) is a leading university research institute with a rich history dating back to the early 1970s. Its origins are deeply rooted in the development of cybernetics and industrial systems research in Spain, with a journey marked by academic collaboration, innovation and strategic evolution.
The institute foundation began in 1971 when the Institute of Cybernetics Engineering was established by the Polytechnic University of Barcelona (UPB, now UPC). Later in 1975 it was merged with the Institute of Biocybernetics, from the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), creating the Institute of Cybernetics (IC). This joint initiative between the UPB and CSIC rapidly became a pioneering centre for research in cybernetics, robotics and automatic control.
In 1995, the CSIC decided to end its partnership, prompting a strategic reorganization of the IC. Recognizing the opportunity to redefine the institute’s structure, IC members collaborated with colleagues from the Laboratory of Industrial Organization (LOI) in the Department of Management at UPC to propose the creation of a new university research institute that would bring together IC researchers and LOI members, promoting the natural synergies between automatic control, robotics and industrial engineering. Their proposal received support from the university administration, ensuring the institute’s continuity and fostering new collaborations.
By 1998, the organizational framework for the new institute was finalized and a formal structure was established. In January 2003, the transformation of the IC into a new university research institute of UPC was officially approved, giving rise to the Institute of Industrial and Control Engineering (IOC).
The IOC has evolved into a dynamic research environment that fosters collaboration across diverse fields such as control engineering, industrial management, mathematics and robotics. Its multidisciplinary approach promotes cutting-edge research and technological innovation, supported by highly skilled academic and technical staff. The institute offers an inspiring setting for researchers who are committed to advancing knowledge and finding practical solutions to complex industrial challenges.
Over its more than 25 years of existence, the IOC has achieved numerous milestones that underscore its academic impact and research excellence:
Doctoral and Master’s Programs: The institute rapidly established a robust doctoral program on Automatic Control, Robotics and Computer Vision, and later a second program on Supply Chain and Operations Management, which continue to produce high-quality theses and contribute to global scientific advancements. In addition, a master's program in Automatic Control and Robotics was developed together with the Department of Automatic Control (ESAII).
- Research impact: The institute staff has participated in many national and international projects, carrying out their activities in well-equipped laboratories with the latest equipment, and publishing results in top international conferences and journals.
- Collaborative Governance: The institute’s structure has adapted to changes within the UPC, including updates to the university’s statutes and integration into strategic governance bodies. These changes have ensured its continued relevance and alignment with the broader academic ecosystem.
The IOC remains committed to advancing research and education in industrial systems and control. Its dedication to fostering innovation, collaboration, and academic excellence has positioned it as a key player in the UPC and the international research community.
As the institute looks to the future, it continues to focus on strengthening research output, expanding its academic programs, and contributing to technological advancements that address real-world challenges. With a proud legacy and a forward-thinking approach, the IOC invites researchers, students, and industry partners to join in shaping the next chapter of innovation and discovery.
